Assignment: Notice about Title IX and Class Discussion Parameters --Please Read--
As we start to get into more involved discussions about sex and sexuality, discussions which are essential to our topic, we should keep the following in mind:
1) No discussion we have will require you to disclose anything about your own sex life or sexuality. Indeed, you should feel absolutely no pressure to share personal details about these things--absolutely no part of your grade will depend on it.
1.5) As a faculty member, I am a "mandated reporter" under federal law. That means that I am legally obliged to report (to the campus Title IX Coordinator) incidents of sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual abuse, and other crimes. This is not optional for me--I am not allowed to keep such things confidential. I mention it because it may well inform your decisions about what you want to share in, or out of, class.
2) We need to be super sensitive about what others may share. No one is here to be criticized or critiqued, especially about personal things. In any case, we won't tolerate any personally pointed criticism.
3) Some of the links I post here may involve sexuality or sexually relevant issues (like the one I just posted about the fashion show in Berlin). I will always note that sort of content in a way that allows you to opt out before clicking. VISITING THOSE LINKS IS NEVER REQUIRED.
(Keep in mind that even without clicking on a link in a post, simply visiting a post may reveal discussion, in the comments section, that involves these topics. You are of course free to avoid those discussions, too.)
4) Please know that Hendrix is very concerned about your well-being, and about your rights. There are well-worked out systems of support and protection at your disposal. There are many sections of the Student Handbook which explain these systems and their procedures. Make use of them--they are positively aimed at keeping Hendrix safe and fair for you.
