CUPID & PSYCHE OUT LOUD: A DINNER/READING
A king and queen sacrifice their daughter to a monster, who turns out to be the god of love...
What? An event at which we'll enjoy a buffet of Mediterranean fare (vegetarian options available) and then read aloud (in English) the story of Cupid and Psyche from Apuleius' Golden Ass, a Latin novel
When? Friday 12/1, 5-7 p.m.
Where? Murphy House
Hosted by? The Classics Program, with generous funding from the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation; there is no cost to participate
Preparation? No prior knowledge is assumed, and no preparation is required; just come ready to eat, talk, and read aloud a page or two of the story that you'll be given at the dinner
Why? Because ancient literature was often shared aloud in dinner-party settings and because it's good to build community over food and words as we celebrate the end of the semester!
Interested? Seats are limited and must be reserved in advance by emailing Dr. Resinski at resinski@hendrix.edu; since spots are limited, please be sure you'll be able to attend before reserving a place at the table
More information about the text:
Apuleius' Golden Ass was written in the 2nd century CE, and one section of the novel tells the story of the love between the mortal princess Psyche and the god Cupid. The tale of Cupid and Psyche has a fairy-tale quality to it--and scholars identify it as a precursor to the stories of Beauty and the Beast, Bluebeard, and Cinderella. We will use the translation of Walter Pater (a prominent Victorian man of letters), and our reading will be accompanied by striking images of the tale by Errol Le Cain (a noted 20th century artist and illustrator).
